What is myelin?

Myelin is a white-colored sheath made of mostly fat and cholesterol that wraps around a nerve cell. Myelin’s main function is to insulate the neuron, protect the axon, and direct the nerve’s impulse where it’s supposed to go.
Biology professors use the insulated wire analogy to help students understand what myelin does. A naked wire will zap anything close to it, but an insulated wire will keep the electricity moving in the direction it’s supposed to.

Here’s what you can do for routine myelin maintenance.

1. Support your mitochondria

Frequent Bulletproof Radio guest Dr. Terry Wahls, MD reversed her MS by focusing on supporting her mitochondria. Mitochondrial abnormalities tank your metabolism, which steals yoru cells’ energy and causes a cascade that leads to lower myelin production and shoddy repair. [27]

4. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)

Vitamin C plays a crucial role in myelin formation. It turns on genes that stimulate the production of BDNF, [38] which helps brain cells survive and split into new neurons. [39]

In addition to stimulating BDNF, vitamin C helps along collagen production in the brain, which is linked to the formation of the myelin sheath. [40] [41] The ability of schwann cells to make collagen also indicate the quality of myelin that the schwann cells produce. [42] Vitamin C is crucial to this process, because collagen synthesis doesn’t happen anywhere in the body without vitamin C.

6. Avoid alcohol

Chronic alcoholism speeds up normal age-related myelin deterioration in the brain. [43] Even after alcoholics quit drinking, you’ll see damaged myelin, especially in the circuits that modulate impulsive behavior. [44] That means it’s harder to resist the urge to drink after quitting.

7. Get enough iron

When your iron stores go low, your oligodendrocytes do not properly split into new cells and you won’t produce the myelin you would if you had enough iron. [45] That said, too much iron can oxidize in the body, so don’t go overboard. Get your iron from grass-fed beef and lamb and green leafy vegetables instead of reaching for supplements.

8. Iodine to support thyroid health

Thyroid hormone impacts brain function starting with early brain development in utero. [46] Thyroid function directly affects myelin quality, and people with sluggish thyroids almost universally list brain fog at the top of the symptoms list.

The thyroid hormone T3 turns on myelin genes and signals the oligodendrocytes to differentiate into myelin-producing cells. [47] Additionally, T3 reduces damage to neurons while promoting remyelination in damaged nerve cells. [48]

Thyroid hormone goes wonky for a number of reasons, the most common being iodine deficiency. Iodine deficiency measurably slows myelination. [49]

If you’re deficient, iodine supplementation is an easy fix. Iodine supplements are cheap, so it’s worth looking for a high-quality kelp iodine supplement that comes from waters with low levels of heavy metals. If you choose to supplement, talk to your doctor. You may also want a quality selenium supplement to go along with it.

9. Zinc and micronutrients

Micronutrient deficiencies impact brain function, [50] and animal studies indicate that the myelin-zinc connection may be involved in brain impairment from nutrient deficiencies. [51] Zinc ions strengthen the myelin sheath by preventing myelin basic protein from detaching from brain myelin membranes. [52] Lack of zinc could explain weaknesses and deterioration.

10. Feed your brain ketones

Ketones are brain energy. In the case of age-related mitochondrial dysfunction, the brain looks for ketones to meet energy demands. It craves ketones so badly that it will break down myelin in order to get to the fats it needs to generate ketones, and then it will use those ketones to make ATP for energy. [53]

Myelin benefits from the availability of ketones as well. High fat diets improve myelination [54] and when both ketones and glucose are available, the brain chooses ketones to synthesize myelin. [55]

11. Exercise

Studies that assessed the effects of exercise on memory point to myelin as the reason for improvements. Exercise increased volume and thickness of myelin and at the same time reducing myelin loss, [56] which resulted in memory improvements.

Additionally, exercise improved memory by reducing myelin damage from lack of blood flow, which increased BDNF. [57]

12. Avoid EMFs

Living in a hyper-connected world, you are constantly exposed to EMFs unless you make a conscious effort to take a break from them. Before we dive into the SuperTrades review, it’s important to know a bit about the service. Super-Trades.com is a subscription-based stock picking service specializing in trading small-cap and momentum stocks. The site is run by Paul Scolardi aka Superman. Scolardi was a certified public accountant (CPA) by trade but is now a full time trader and educator. The site provides trade alerts through their live online chatroom and text messaging service. A morning watchlist is provided for members that outlines the stocks to monitor for set-ups during the trading day. There are many compelling testimonials on the site claiming his proteges have made hundreds of thousands of dollars in profits from his alerts. He even has a student who made over $2 million and now runs his own trading alerts service. The membership information is very simple. Subscription pricing is $147/month for the SuperAlerts plan or $247/month for the SuperPro plan with discounts for prepaid annual subscriptions.

The main trading style is short-term swing trading of medium to low-float small-cap stocks. Intraday scalping is also practiced daily in the chatroom, but Scolardi is more of a swing trader that administers day trading management techniques. It is also important to be aware that many of the small-cap stocks can be extremely low float in addition to low priced, which can lead to wild price swings in both directions. One has to be very careful of the pump and dump nature of the action. The thin liquidity can spike prices just at the mention of a position. This can suck in newbies to chase prices and end up biting impulsive traders. Never use market orders on these thin float stocks.

Most of the alerts are positioned to the long side and logically so since small-caps tend to be tough to short, especially thin floats. The intraday alerts focus on momentum movers that tend to have heavier volume that day due to a new item, rumor or technical catalyst. Scolardi is a big proponent of theme-based stock picks that focus on groups of stocks that embody a specific industry, product or trend fueled by a popular theme. When he is spot on, he will get subscribers into position ahead of the public and big boys resulting in a massive profits and an influx of liquidity to take out the early buyers. Scolardi hits many of these types of trades throughout the year. However, it is worth noting that his losing picks can dry up liquidity wise causing holders to feel extra pain if they are stuck in the position. Superman does tend to pick slightly more financially sound companies, unless its based purely on a speculative theme. He will note when the fundamentals are shoddy and it is up to the trader to determine the type of allocation to take based on the increased risk of the underlying stock.

Swing Trading Education

The super-trades.com website offers plenty of training material through archived webinars and videos included in the $247/month subscription plan. This includes access to the video library and weekly video lessons in addition to research reports, IPO and Earnings reports tracker access. Superman will market a training boot camp periodically where he will mentor students, but no details on pricing are available on the site.

Profit.ly Chatroom

The chatroom is part of the Profit.ly network, which is also home to traders like Timothy Sykes. With that said, Superman is consistently a top five performer on the network which includes a handful of other widely known small-cap gurus. Superman’s chatroom is a simple text based chatroom with a members and moderators list and room for messages. The participants usually number around the 100 mark at any given time. Superman is very active in the room with his posts and seems welcoming and open to questions and feedback. The overall tone is that of a community as there are many good traders that post their ideas and positions throughout the day. You can find some good ideas in the room in addition to Superman’s picks. There doesn’t seem to be too much noise and most messages are usually updates on people’s trades. Overall, the room is focused on business and not so much chatter (similar to Investors Underground but at a smaller scale). There is actually another chatroom dedicated for off-hours and off-topic chats.

What Type of Trader is Superman Trades Best For?

This service is good for traders with small accounts under the $25k PDT rule that are looking for swing trades with pure risk capital. More seasoned traders that are familiar with low float stocks may also be interested as long they can manage the positions. Due to the risky nature of the picks, you should only be playing with risk capital that you can afford to lose. Small-caps are highly volatile and liquidity can vaporize once momentum is stifled. However, Superman has had some incredible winners. His CPA background definitely helps him analyze the financials and apply financial market metrics and accounting analytics to determine undervalued stocks ahead of the crowd. Unlike many popular gurus, Scolardi actually knows how to read financial statements and SEC filings and interpret the true sentiment behind the numbers. He is meticulous in this sense and it shows from his in-depth research reports. His forte is spotting themes almost before they become realized.

Is the Service a Good Value?

The pricing of the site is an incredible good value. The basic membership at $147/month is good for seasoned traders that don’t need the weekly lessons. However, the $247/month plan includes his premium research reports, which uncover under the radar stocks that have exploded to the upside in the past. I like how there is virtually no upsell and constantly marketing on the site. It is purely a trader’s chatroom with the focus on profits and not being pitched an endless supply of products and add-on services. That is refreshing.

4 Reading Techniques To Help You Read More in Less Time

We learn reading techniques early on in life without even noticing it. As kids, we would open our fairytale books and to our surprise, recognize some of the words we’ve heard repeatedly read to us. Before we knew it, we were jumping to the exciting parts of the books.

Growing up, we learn different techniques on how to read better. Most of us love leisure reading because we can take our time with the words. However, speed reading is also important for other aspects of life, such as schoolwork.

Like other skills (e.g. listening, public speaking, etc.), it requires mastery so you can utilize it effectively. If you know WHEN to use the different reading techniques in everyday scenarios, you’ll be able to save time AND effort. Avoid reading intensively when you can skim, or don’t get in trouble for scanning when you should’ve read more carefully.

Here are the four reading techniques – and the best situations to use them.

4 Reading Techniques To Help You Read More in Less Time

1) Scanning.

You probably use this reading method more times in a day than the other techniques. Scanning involves looking ONLY for specific information (such as keywords, numbers, names, etc.) while omitting other details. There are three things you need to process in your mind before scanning a material:

  • Objectivewhat am I supposed to be looking for?
  • Type of material to be scanned – where can I get the information I need?
  • The layout – How is this info in this material arranged?

Phonebooks, menu boards, and email inboxes all have familiar layouts to us, so these are the easiest to scan. In-depth articles and full novels on the other hand, are the trickiest – especially if they are made up of walls of texts.

Scan content when:

  • checking your inbox. Scanning is a great method as it allows you to quickly sift through the most urgent messages. Read the subject line and determine if it deserves your immediate attention or not.
  • buying from book orgrocery stores. The human eyes are great at spotting patterns. Instead of going through every title or item, scan shelves for your target purchase. Use your fingers as a guide. In a matter of seconds, you should spot what you need.
  • choosing meals . If a restaurant or fast food joint has more than 10 options and you only have 15 minutes to spare, use the power of scanning to your advantage. Once your eyes focus on a familiar pattern (like the words ‘lunch set’ or ‘meat entrees’), you can read only what’s in that category.

In general, scanning is most effective for material with a set layout, such as newspapers and phonebooks. This is the best technique to use when you need specific information – fast.

2) Skimming.

Skimming involves reading more in less time. Unlike scanning, you first need to get the main idea of the material before looking for certain details that back it up. This works best for non-fiction works.

Similar to other reading techniques, you need to establish the following before skimming can be called successful:

  • Objective – what do I need from this material?
  • Main Idea – what is the main message or thought of this piece?
  • Supporting Data – how can I prove that this is the main idea of the material?

Please note that you might not be able to get the entire thought using this method. Use ONLY when needed. Skimming crucial material, such as contracts, novels, or research papers, is NOT advised because you could miss vital details (and regret it later).

Skim content when:

  • reading reviews. Need a third party opinion before buying something? Skim reviews to get the overall impression of the product or service. Many testimonials these days have four parts, which are perfect for skimming: review title, pros, cons, and recommendation.
  • impromptu presentations. Need to give a speech in an hour? As long as you have a script (and you’re more or less familiar with the topic), you can skim through the important parts and add your own improvisation. The important thing is that you understand the main message you want to impart to your audiences.
  • quick research. Say you need to write a piece on when blogging first became popular. Skimming is great for when you need to cover the basics. Collect your resources, read a couple of paragraphs, then take the main ideas of each. You should have something interesting in a couple of hours.
  • reviewing for exams. Skimming also comes in handy if you want to review what you’ve learned. Do note that this only works if you’re already familiar with your subject. A quick skim of a several sentences should refresh your memory on the topics you’ve studied by now.

Need a LOT of information in the shortest amount of time possible? Skimming could be your best friend. Remember: in some special cases, it’s more effective to skip on some parts while reading to save time. Don’t dwell on unnecessary data.

3) Intensive Reading.

Intensive reading is the most time-consuming of all the reading techniques. The main goal here is to retain information for the long-term.

This method is recommended especially for language students, as it helps them truly grasp the meaning of the words in context. But it’s also great for analyzing reports and detailed research. Used in conjunction with skimming and scanning, intensive reading can widen your horizons and help you keep important information longer.

Read intensively when:

  • you get new contracts, business proposals, or memos. Avoid simply skimming or scanning the contents of these papers. It may seem bothersome, particular as these use technical English, but you don’t want to sign anything that you don’t fully understand.
  • using the company chatroom or replying to emails. How many times has it happened that you quickly replied to a coworker or your boss – only to lead to a misunderstanding?

If the content seems to have different interpretations, it’s best to read it intensively, or even ask the source for confirmation. One of the hard lessons learned in life is that many arguments can be avoided if one just learned to pause first and read everything.

Need to power-up this reading technique? Use note-taking every time you need to read something in detail. Post-It notes make it easy, as you can stick it to pages without ruining them. For those who want more in-depth analysis of what they’ve just read, notebooks may work better than small Post-Its.

4) Extensive Reading.

Extensive reading focuses on reading for pleasure. You choose your own material, your pace, as well as how you’ll interpret the content of what you’ve just read. This strategy is great not only for fiction works, but also if you want to improve your writing, and expand your vocabulary. It helps develop a reader’s:

  • Independence – when people read for pleasure, they’ll be surprised at how pleasurable the activity really is. In time, they will grow their own book collection and pick up reading habits.
  • Comprehension – when you have the freedom to choose what you read, you can learn comfortably at your own pace.
  • General Knowledge – with extensive reading, you’ll feel free to discover new things everyday. As there’s no pressure at all, you unconsciously open yourself up to the world and its vast share of knowledge

Read extensively when:

  • you have free time. There’s NOT set rule or trick to this one because you’re just reading for fun. Read what you want, when you want to, and at your own speed. Select from various materials like novels, magazines, blogs, or even street signs.

Reader Action Steps

Sometimes, one method can evolve into another based on the person’s learning style. For instance: while skimming, you discover that you actually like the content and so you read intensively to get the gist of each word. When it comes to reading, the rules aren’t absolute.

These are good skill to have, especially in our dynamic, connected world today. Try these strategies for yourself and see how it feels:

  • Try scanning your inbox for newsletters you’d like to read first thing in the morning. Not a digital person in the AM? You can do the same with newspapers or magazines during your commute.
